13 Fishing Technique-Specific Rods Designed to help you fish more efficiently and confidently
Certain fishing techniques and lures are so effective that they redefine how we fish. Such is the case with the shaking a minnow technique, the venerable Rapala Jigging Rap, and the increasingly popular power corking approach. While top-performing lures have critical, built-in action, your fishing rod is essential to getting the best performance from each presentation.
It’s with this mindset that 13 Fishing® set out to create three technique-specific rods. Enter the 13 Fishing Shaker, Jigging Rap, and Power Cork rods—each designed to maximize efficiency, lure control, and hook-up success for their respective techniques.
Whether you’re targeting bass, walleyes, or a mix of species, these tailor-made rods are designed to help you fish more efficiently and confidently.
Shaker Rod: Built for “Shaking a Minnow”
Few modern bass fishing techniques have gained traction as quickly as “shaking a minnow.” Designed to imitate the erratic movement and flash of baitfish, the technique relies heavily on rod input to create the signature side-to-side roll that triggers bites from even the most pressured fish.
The challenge is control. If your rod is too stiff, the bait loses the seductive side-to-side rolling action. If it’s too soft, it absorbs the shake and fails to impart action to the bait. Additionally, an underpowered soft rod lacks the feel needed for subtle bite detection and quick hook-setting responsiveness when shaking. It’s a very specific feel—one you quickly gain appreciation for when shaking a minnow.
That’s exactly the problem the 13 Fishing Shaker rod was built to solve.
The rod features a super-responsive, springy tip that does the work of imparting action to the bait, while the midsection is designed to load under pressure—absorbing headshakes and hard runs once a fish is hooked. That secondary load is critical, especially when fishing light line where keeping fish pinned becomes the priority.
From a design standpoint, the goal wasn’t just to make the bait move—it was to create a rod that performs through the entire sequence of the technique, from fast and accurate casts to subtle bite detection between shakes to maintaining control during the fight.
Paired with a VMC Minnow Shaker Jig and CrushCity Mooch Minnow, Freeloader, or The Jerk, the system becomes highly efficient—allowing anglers to create precise action while maintaining the forgiveness needed to land more fish. And don’t limit the technique to bass—it also excels for walleyes and a wide range of gamefish.
Jigging Rap Rod: Precision for a Legendary Presentation
Few baits carry the legacy and versatility of the Rapala Jigging Rap. Whether targeting suspended fish, working it across the bottom, vertical jigging, or covering water with forward-facing sonar, the bait’s effectiveness lies in its ability to quickly dart, glide, and return to center with the snap of the rod. Its fast fall rate also makes it a top choice when using forward-facing sonar, where quickly getting a lure in front of the fish is essential.
But properly fishing this unique heavy metal lure can be challenging—and according to 13 Fishing’s design team, the rod is often the limiting factor.
The Jigging Rap rod was developed alongside pro walleye angler Duane “Dewey” Hjelm, one of the technique’s most dialed-in anglers.
It’s stiff enough in the tip to snap the bait cleanly and control cadence, but once a fish is hooked, the rod transitions into a more forgiving midsection that absorbs headshakes and keeps the single treble hook or nose-and-tail hooks pinned. That secondary action is key, especially when fishing heavier Jigging Raps or dealing with fish at depth.
The result is a rod with what can best be described as a dual-action profile.
Length also plays a role. At 6’10”, the rod was intentionally designed for casting precision and reduced fatigue—giving anglers the control of a shorter rod while still maintaining enough length for that critical secondary action and to manage fish effectively.
Matched with the Jigging Rap, the system allows anglers to fish more efficiently, maintain better bait control and significantly improve landing percentages across a wide range of scenarios.
Power Cork Rod: Redefining Bobber Fishing
Power corking has evolved far beyond traditional bobber fishing. With the rise of forward-facing sonar, the technique has become a highly active and precise way to target walleye—requiring long, accurate casts, precise depth control, and efficient hook-setting at distance.
Designing a rod for that purpose meant rethinking what a “bobber rod” should be.
At first glance, the 13 Fishing Power Cork rod may feel more powerful than expected—but that’s intentional. The rod was specifically designed around longer casts, monofilament line and a complete rig that includes slip floats, weights and terminal tackle.
Because monofilament—commonly used with this technique—has significant stretch, additional power is required to maintain control and drive hooks home effectively. The rod’s moderate-fast action helps load the blank during the cast—allowing anglers to launch the full rig efficiently—while still providing the power needed when reeling into fish.
Balance was another key factor. The rod is designed to pair with larger spinning reels and maintain comfort throughout long days of fishing, especially in windy conditions where the technique often shines.
Guide sizing also plays a critical role, ensuring that slip knots move cleanly through the guides without interruption—something that can make or break the efficiency of the entire system.
Paired with a slip bobber, VMC Neon Moon Eye Jig, Sufix monofilament and live bait, the setup becomes a precise and repeatable system for targeting walleyes anywhere in the water column—especially in conditions where more traditional approaches fall short.
Final Thoughts: Purpose-Built Performance
As fishing techniques continue to evolve—especially with the influence of forward-facing sonar—gear has followed suit. Technique-specific rods like the Shaker, Jigging Rap and Power Cork models represent a shift toward purpose-built performance, where every component is designed to enhance a specific presentation.
For anglers looking to maximize efficiency, improve bait action, and increase hook-up ratios, these rods offer a clear advantage. When paired with the right lures and systems, they turn effective techniques into highly refined systems capable of producing consistent results across a wide range of fisheries.
